Promoting Unity: "ELBC Will Transition to a Public Broadcaster," Piah Promises

Monrovia, Liberia: In a significant announcement, Information Minister Jerolinmek Piah has pledged to transform the state broadcaster, ELBC (The Liberia Broadcasting Corporation), into a radio station that serves all Liberians. This strategic shift aims to foster inclusivity and bridge societal divides.


Minister Piah emphasized that ELBC’s core purpose is to be a unifying force, transcending political affiliations. By providing equitable access to information, the state radio can play a pivotal role in promoting peace and national development.


During his recent confirmation at the Liberian Senate, Minister Piah underscored that ELBC’s mission extends beyond any specific group. "It exists to serve all citizens, regardless of their background or beliefs."

"As a public broadcaster, ELBC will be a conduit for dialogue, understanding, and shared experiences," he told Senators.


To seek consent of Senators to agree with the President's nomination, the then Minister destinate, noted that unifying Ruling and Opposition Parties, the state radio’s transformation must bridge political gaps. It will act as a neutral platform, fostering dialogue between ruling and opposition parties.


By facilitating constructive conversations, ELBC can contribute to a more cohesive and informed society.


For Ethical Journalism, Minister Piah admonished journalists, especially talk show hosts, to uphold ethics in their analysis of critical national issues and be responsible and avoid biased coverage, an essence for maintaining public trust.


During his presentation at the hearing, Minister Piah said, he envisions that Liberian media will be devoid of partisan politics. Adding that by minimizing political influence, ELBC and the media in Liberia can focus on its core mission to promote unity among Liberians, transcending political divisions.
