February 27, 2024, Monrovia, Liberia — Montserrado County District Nine Representative, Frank Saah Foko, has initiated a call for the impeachment of Liberia’s 25th President, Joseph N. Boakai. Speaking to 2a Communication, Representative Foko announced his intention to submit an article of impeachment to the plenary this Thursday, seeking the removal of President Boakai from office.
The grounds for impeachment, as outlined by Representative Foko, stem from President Boakai’s alleged mishandling of presidential affairs within a remarkably short timeframe—just one month. Foko contends that such actions warrant swift legislative intervention, including the possibility of impeachment.
Among the allegations raised by Representative Foko is President Boakai’s removal of government officials who hold tenure positions. Additionally, Foko accuses the President of appointing family members to key government roles.
However, legal experts have pointed out that Article 61 of Liberia’s constitution grants the President immunity from legal proceedings, both judicial and otherwise, during their tenure. Nevertheless, this immunity does not extend to criminal acts committed while in office. Some observers argue that Representative Foko’s move may be in conflict with this constitutional provision, given that President Boakai has not been charged with any criminal offense.
The situation remains fluid, and the Liberian legislature will undoubtedly deliberate on the merits of this impeachment call in the coming days.
