Former Auditor-General John Morlu Critiques Composition of Liberia’s Asset Recovery Taskforce

Monrovia, Liberia – In a candid expression of concern, former Auditor-General John Morlu has voiced significant reservations about the members appointed to President Joseph Boakai’s newly established Asset Recovery Taskforce. The taskforce, formed under Executive Order No. 126, is charged with the recovery of public resources and properties.

Morlu’s critique, delivered via his official Facebook page on March 10, 2024, questions the integrity, education, exposure, and competence of the taskforce members, particularly highlighting Cllr. Edwin Kla Martin and Alexander Cuffy. He argues that the fight against corruption demands consistent and genuine action rather than what he perceives as symbolic gestures.

According to Morlu, Cllr. Martin’s alleged ties to Cllr. Sayma Cephus, a former NPFL rebel, and his multiple visa refusals by the United States, coupled with mentions in the Internal Audit Agency’s report for corruption at the LACC, cast doubt on his suitability for leading such a critical initiative.

Furthermore, Morlu points to the General Auditing Commission’s RIA report, which he claims accuses Alexander Cuffy of multiple instances of corruption during his tenure at the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU). These allegations, Morlu suggests, undermine Cuffy’s moral authority to spearhead the asset recovery efforts.

Morlu also cautions that the current approach mirrors that of former President Weah, predicting similar outcomes if the scope of asset recovery does not extend beyond Weah’s six-year term to encompass the broader history of Liberia.

The former Auditor-General’s remarks have sparked a dialogue on the effectiveness and credibility of the Asset Recovery Taskforce, underscoring the need for a robust and transparent process in reclaiming the nation’s assets.
