March 13, 2024----Monrovia, Liberia: In a compelling address during the Supreme Court’s March 2024 term opening, Associate Justice Jamesetta Howard Wolokolie issued a clarion call for a paradigm shift within Liberia’s judicial system. Justice Wolokolie, standing in for Chief Justice Sie-A-Nyene G. Yuoh, highlighted a pressing need for behavioral change among the judiciary’s actors to restore public trust.
Despite ongoing efforts to inform the public about the judiciary’s transformation, Justice Wolokolie candidly recognized that such initiatives fall short without a corresponding change in the conduct of justices, judges, magistrates, judicial employees, and lawyers. The persistence of ‘business as usual’ practices undermine the public’s confidence and hampers the administration of justice.
Responding to the concerns raised by Justice Wolokolie and Liberian National Association President Sylvester Rennie, President Joseph Nyumah Boakai has committed to reviewing the issues and providing feedback.
Justice Wolokolie emphasized the Yuoh administration’s rebranding agenda, which seeks to realign all judicial actors with its mission and vision. This reorientation is envisioned to foster a significant behavioral overhaul, essential for those at the heart of justice administration.
The judiciary’s first phase of reorientation exercises marks the beginning of this ambitious journey towards systemic change. It is a step towards a judiciary that not only dispenses justice but also embodies the principles of integrity and accountability that are the bedrock of public confidence.
